The 5th Encounter with the Earth took place in Santa María La Ribera on Sunday, April 2. UNAM’s Museo de Geología and Instituto de Geología organize this annual activity. Tents were set up throughout the Alameda to hold educational activities. Artistic events and concerts were also offered to the audience. We were invited to participate in this edition with a booth where we distributed material about the community and environmental awareness activities offered by Casa Gallina. Biologists Lourdes Cruz Terán and Iván Pérez Samayoa from Estanquillo el 32 coordinated guided tours to identify plants and trees in the barrio. Participants located the different species and observed their characteristics; they also helped place labels near some of them. Designed for children, a workshop coordinated by Ketzali Arreola encouraged participants to imagine bio-cities where buildings were in harmony with nature. Then the children built a model using recycled cardboard and local leaves and seeds. During our work at the Alameda, Casa Gallina invited neighbors who had not been previously approached, and established new contacts with groups in the community that share our interests.
