This activity attracts neighbors interested in learning how to make home cleaning products using affordable ingredients. The instructor, neighbor Javier Chapado, teaches how to make different types of soaps—body, dishes, and laundry— as well as softeners, sanitizers, deodorants, shampoos, talcum powder, and balms. During class, neighbors exchange useful tips to save water at home; they also learn how to interpret the water bill in order to monitor their use. Chapado provides the tools to understand labels on commercial products to find out how the cleaning products industry uses chemical substances that seldom contribute to the effectiveness of the product but that are responsible for creating health and environmental problems.
