Helguera (b. Mexico City, 1971) is an artist who works with installation, sculpture, photography, drawing and socially engaged art. Helguera has experimented with forma as diverse as conference, museum practices, musical performances and scriptural fiction. His work as an educator continually transcends his artistic practice, where his work often touches upon aspects of interpretation and dialogue, questioning the role of contemporary culture in a global reality. Helguera has exhibited at the Reina Sofía Museum of Art, Madrid, Spain; the ICA, Boston, USA; RCA, London; 8th Biennial of Havana, PERFORMA 05, Havana, Cuba; Shedhalle, Zurich, Switzerland; MoMA PS1, New York, USA; Brooklyn Museum, USA; IFA Galerie, Bonn, Germany; Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, Tokyo, Japan; MALBA, Buenos Aires, Argentina; Ex-Teresa Alternative Space, Mexico City. Since 1991, he has worked in a variety of contemporary art museums: as director of public programs in the department of education of the Guggenheim Museum in New York (1998-2005) and he currently serves as director of the Adult Academic Program at the Museum of Modern Art in the same city. In 2010, he was appointed as curator of the 8th Biennial of Mercosur in Porto Alegre, Brazil, the same position that he held in September, 2011.
